Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
