The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
