RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
