EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
