New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
