Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
